Reporting Embodied Carbon in Buildings

What is the session about?

It is well-established that a large part of any building’s carbon impact is from the embodied carbon in the materials that go into making it. According to LETI, about a third of an asset’s overall emissions, which includes operational carbon, come from the fabric used in construction and the ongoing maintenance and refurbishment.

A Private Members’ Bill is currently going through the UK’s Parliament on a proposed amendment to the Building Regulations, dubbed ‘Part Z’. This outlines proposed requirements for assessing whole-life carbon emissions of a building, and limiting the embodied carbon emissions, for all major building projects.

In this session you will hear from Tim den Dekker and Will Arnold, Associates at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, who will explain what the Proposed Z means for the sector and how you can get ready to meet the challenge.

What will I achieve?

By joining this session, you will:

  • Understand what the Proposed Part Z will mean for projects
  • Learn what will be expected in terms of measurement and reporting of embodied carbon
  • Understand the importance of addressing embodied carbon in buildings to achieve a business’s sustainability goals, NZC in particular

What level is the session and do I need any particular skills?

This is a intermediate-level session and assumes you already have knowledge about embodied carbon, scopes and carbon reporting.

What are the technical requirements?

You will need:

  • Internet connection
  • A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook)
  • Earphones/headphones/speakers (preferable)
  • A tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone to load facilitation tools
