COP 28: Climate Mitigation and Adaptation - Virtual Conference
Event/Workshop
GB
Wednesday, 13 December 2023, 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Climate change is still the most
existential issue of our times. We need to continue and, indeed, redouble of
efforts to tackle it in order to create a just and fair low carbon future. As
COP28 in Dubai comes to a close, hear from our panel of industry experts from
major infrastructure projects, major contractors, and suppliers, on what they
are currently doing and what they see as the priorities for the future.
What is this conference about?
In 2022, almost 42% of the UK’s electricity generation was from renewable sources – wind, solar, biomass and hydro. This is good progress, but in the context of the target to reach a zero carbon grid by 2035, and the fact that renewables and low carbon sources of energy make up less than 15% of our overall energy demand, we have a way to go. Whilst we are pushing for both more renewable energy generation and a greater supply of technology and equipment that can run on low and zero carbon power, we also have to address the need to adapt. Recent extreme weather events such as the floods in Brazil and Libya and the heatwave in Europe this summer are testament to this need for greater resilience. COP27 saw the agreement by the Parties on a fund for ‘loss and damage’ – supporting those nations and regions affected by climate change to repair and adapt. COP28 will be the test of how effective that is.
This virtual conference will talk about to the issues of mitigation AND adaptation – how we are reducing our energy demand and the carbon emissions arising from that to keep on track with the Paris goals, but also, crucially, how we are adapting to the changing environment.
You will hear from clients, contractors and suppliers on their experiences of addressing and implementing the twin challenges of mitigation and adaptation.
This is a live online session. We will contact you with joining instructions at least 24 hours before your session starts.
By joining this session you will:
- Hear from leaders in the industry on how they are tackling climate change
- Learn about new technologies and ways of working, and the direction they are heading
- Develop your understanding that it's not just about mitigation; adaptation, resilience and a just transition equally part of the bigger picture
- Get insight on where your business fits into this and how you can play your role
What are the technical requirements?
You will need:
- Internet connection
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook)
- Earphones/headphones/speakers (preferable)
- A tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone to load facilitation tools
