Can we build Passivhaus in Steel? - Lunch 'n' Learn
A 1-hour Lunch ‘n’ Learn forming part of our offsite carbon series, discussing how we can achieve best practice operational energy targets and reduce embodied carbon using steel. This session will be delivered virtually.
What is this session about?
In this training session, Allan Smith, Low Carbon Manager at Morrison Construction (Galliford Try), will demonstrate how, by using physical prototypes and a purpose-designed steel testing rig, they have been able to achieve this best practice operational energy standard.
Allan will also explain the options available to designers using steel to achieve embodied carbon benchmarks such as the Net Zero Public Sector Buildings Standard in Scotland. We’ll talk about how a Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) mindset can help with optioneering processes and share case studies.
What will I achieve?
This session will help you to:
- Understand the implications of steel frame construction on operational energy
- Apply design techniques to minimise whole life carbon
- Learn about pros and cons of different steel / panel systems
- Understand how to enable greater standardisation through DfMA
- See how MMC can deliver high quality architecture
What level is the session and do I need any particular skills?
This intermediate session is best suited to design teams but will also be of value to anyone who wants to better understand how offsite construction can be used to create low carbon buildings.
What can I expect from a Lunch ‘n’ Learn?
Lunch 'n' Learns offer a quick introduction to a topic, or present a case study, 45-60 mins to fit around your busy schedule.
