Large Scale Material Reuse: Through Digitisation and Supply Chain Engagement (Finishes and Interiors) - Webinar

Join us for a 1-hour webinar on Pre-Demolition Audits.

What is the session about?

Construction accounts for over 50% of UK landfill and up to 14% of global GHG in embodied carbon from the replacement of materials. Currently <2% of a building's components are reused and refit cycles are becoming more frequent, exasperating the problem.

Meanwhile there is a growing demand for secondary materials as a way to reduce waste, cut carbon and save cost. This paradigm shift is picking up momentum, yet it is an extremely challenging problem to solve, one that requires collaboration and engagement across the entire supply chain. Architects, designers, demolition contractors, fit out contractors and manufacturers must come together in ways they haven't before to see success in this sector.

Rob Smith is the co-founder and COO of Material Index, a company that specialises in producing high quality pre-demolition and pre-refurbishment audits, and Material Passports, using their in-house digital tool. By capturing a buildings content, at a component level and tagging useful information, a meaningful conversation can be had around the pathway of those materials; i.e. reuse within the existing scheme, reuse within another building in the clients portfolio, or pushed the Material Index marketplace for reuse elsewhere. Together with their digital tool Material Index works with developers and supply chain partners from material resellers to contractors, re-manufactures and storage and logistics partners to maximise reuse in construction

Rob will be presenting the work Material Index are doing in this sector by show casing real life case studies.

What will I achieve?

At this session you will grow your understanding of:

  • The state of the industry with respect to reuse
  • The practical steps required for reuse to take place
  • The digital technology that exists to enable large scale reuse to happen.

Material Index is at the cutting edge of this sector, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved and we'd love to share what we have been doing with some real life case studies

What level is the webinar and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginner level webinar. Whether you are looking to supply or source secondary materials or just have an interest in sustainability, construction, digital technology or the circular economy you will find this session informative and interesting.
