Nature Based Design and Bio-Based Materials for Retrofit
What is this session about?
Good retrofit design is crucial for its success.
Bio-based materials are being used in various construction elements, including walls, floors, and roofs, offering sustainable alternatives to traditional materials.
Sam Paterson, Embodied Carbon Assessor from Atelier Ten will explore sustainable bio-based materials such as sheep wool, industrial hemp, seaweed and more. He will consider their importance and how they can be brought to scale by innovating on large retrofit projects. The session will explore research, trails and discussions on how to scale up their production and use. Sam will share the benefits and opportunities they provide, considering embodied carbon benefits and savings, the importance of local sourcing and the potential to boost local economies.
The use of bio-based materials, responsible materials and nature based solutions, are at the centre of Morgan Sindall’s retrofit design, particularly in their retrofit of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service Buildings in Edinburgh. This retrofit of these buildings will support the estate in its commitment to Scotland’s decarbonisation strategy of being carbon neutral by 2040. Elizabeth will share how these materials played a crucial role in the project.
By attending this session, you will:
- Understand the key areas of design required in retrofit
- Understand the design of a live retrofit project in Edinburgh
- Understand how natural solutions have been used in this project, and can be used in others
