The Growth of Sustainable Timber – Decarbonising Materials in Scotland Lunch ‘n’ Learn

This 1 hour Lunch ‘n’ Learn will explore the growing importance of sustainable timber as a bio-based material for construction in and beyond Scotland.

What is this session about?

This 1 hour Lunch ‘n’ Learn will explore the growing importance of sustainable timber as a bio-based material for construction. It is one of a series the School is running on Decarbonising Materials in Scotland relevant for its value chain, contractors, clients and designers and architects.

 What will we cover?

As the demand for sustainable building materials increases due to net zero imperatives, join us to hear more about sustainably-sourced timber’s environmental, structural and aesthetic benefits. Discover how timber naturally stores carbon and how it can lead to greater energy efficiency and design flexibility.

The session will hear from:

Crawford Churchill, National Timber Group Scotland Trading Manager and President of the Scottish Timber Trade Association (STTA)

Nicola Jackson, Net Zero Project Lead who worked previously with Robertson Timber Engineering will give an overview on bio-based materials in construction. She will explore their importance in reducing carbon looking at the importance for sustainable timber in relation to embodied carbon and whole life carbon. She will explore where data can be gathered from and what is needed to address the challenge. She will also look at Timber Engineering of mass timber looking at glue-lam, a structurally engineered wood product looking at durability benefits and high structural strength despite being relatively lightweight.

David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer, Deeside Timberframe, based in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, will share sustainability benefits of using timber as a manufacturer, supplier and installation company supplying timber frame kits for the construction industry.

David will explore responsible sourcing,  design considerations to reduce energy and carbon reductions from timber frame. Hear more about prefabrication techniques used in offsite which lead to less construction time and waste and the wider sustainability benefits. Hear operational measures taken to reduce CO2 emissions to net zero. David will also share benefits to the local economy and Scotland’s built environment industry such as through employment.

Kay Keenan Impact Manager, BE-ST  will explore sustainable materials in a wider retrofit context  including a focus on homegrown Wood Fibre Insulation and  Forestry Commission approved insulation. She will share how this BE-ST project aims to demonstrate the possibilities for forestry and manufacturing supply chains to drive economic opportunity and contribute to reducing embodied carbon. Kay will explore wider barriers, challenges and next steps.

This is a live online session. We will contact you with joining instructions at least 24 hours before your session starts.

By the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of responsibly sourced timber as a bio-based material
  • Gain knowledge on its benefits as a material in reducing embodied and whole life carbon
  • Know more about timber product innovations which provide circularity and energy-efficiency benefits
  • Uses of timber in offsite and modern methods of construction
  • The importance designing in decarbonisation of materials

Who is it for:

  • Designers, technicians, construction companies and clients. Anyone looking to drive innovation in the built environment, manufacturers, suppliers and the whole value chain including  green construction specialists, civil engineers, design managers and materials manufacturers and suppliers.
