What will this session will cover?
Participants at this session will learn about the nature and types of plastics commonly encountered in the built environment, their responsible use, finding practical ways to reduce single use plastics on-site or at design stage, and meeting the challenge of the Plastic Packaging Tax and future obligations such as extended produce responsibility. It will also cover some information on packaging which the School has published a report on recently which can be downloaded here
Zero Waste Scotland will cover single use plastics including the Single Use Plastics Product Regulations 2021 which made Scotland the first nation to ban numerous types of problematic single use plastics.
This session will involve Partners from the School's Scotland Leadership Group who will share good practise innovations and examples on plastics and the circular economy including the first principle of reuse of materials.
What will I learn at this session?:
- The nature, types and responsible use of plastics commonly encountered in the built environment
- Partner examples with policy and ambitions in terms of responsible plastic use and reduction of plastic packaging
- Outlining the essentials of some policy changes including the Plastics Packaging Tax and Extended Producer Responsibility
- Practical ways to reduce single use plastics on-site or at the design stage
- The requirements of the Government’s Plastic Packaging tax due in April 2022 and future obligations such as extended produce responsibility
- How suppliers can assist their clients in reducing plastic in packaging and product choices.
- Enable partners and members to consider what you are doing in response to the tax and drive to reduce plastics waste
- How the Single Use Plastics Regulations in Scotland affect the built environment sector
