What is the Diversity survey?

The Sustainability Tool’s annual Diversity Survey collects diversity data aligned with Office of National Statics (ONS) census categories. Organisations across various supply chains, sectors and sizes report their employee data to form industry benchmarks. Categories included in the survey are Gender, Age, Religion & Belief, Ethnicity, Sexual Orientation, Disability, Voluntary Leavers, Part-Time Status, Pay Gap, and Attraction & Recruitment.

This benchmarking exercise enables organisations to compare themselves to the industry and ONS data, which allows them to identify areas for improvement. The industry’s overall outcomes are present at the Annual Benchmarking Event where industry insights and learnings are explored and discussed. It is sponsored by four major transport clients (HS2, National Highways, Network Rail and TfL), the Major Projects Association and the Infrastructure Clients Group.

The workforce diversity survey is complemented by the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) programme activities. The FIR programme, funded by CITB and run by the Supply Chain Sustainability School, is an industry-wide initiative that aims to make workplaces better for everyone. The programme provides, free, industry-endorsed training and resources, guidance and materials, that supports businesses to be more innovative and profitable by addressing workplace culture challenges, and helps attract and retain people from the full pool of talent.

By aligning and uniting their efforts in collecting data from across the sector and working with the FIR programme, the participating clients believe there will be an increase the benefits felt both within their organisations and throughout their supply chains.
