Waste, Resource Efficiency and the Circular Economy

Event/Workshop

In partnership with SSEN, this session will introduce you to the Waste Hierarchy, and the shift from a “linear” economy approach to the concept of a Circular Economy which uses products or materials that have reached “end of life” as inputs to produce the next generation of products that we need.

Waste, Resource Efficiency and the Circular Economy – facilitated by Mark Turner

We live in an age of high profile concerns around climate change and that brings with it an increased demand for efficient use of resources and reduction / elimination of waste.

It is estimated that 13% of raw materials ordered by certain industry sectors are discarded unused. By reducing waste we will increase our efficiency and profitability. In addition, reducing our consumption of raw materials and being more efficient with what we use results in a wide range of environmental and social benefits associated with the consumption of fewer resources and the disposal of waste products.

Consumers, local and national governments and society expect business to deliver better solutions. Products and materials must be used more efficiently and kept in the economy. To move to a Circular Economy approach, we need to reconsider the way we provide services, procure products and dispose of waste, to ensure products and scarce resources can be re-purposed as much as possible within our economic systems.

This Lunch n Learn will introduce you to the Waste Hierarchy, and the shift from a “linear” economy approach to the concept of a Circular Economy which uses products or materials that have reached “end of life” as inputs to produce the next generation of products that we need. Participants will understand the drivers for moving towards a Circular Economy model and the benefits of adopting circular thinking.

We will also look at how many companies have established waste targets and how many are achieving their objectives.

This session forms part of the Climate Academy, a series of six online learning sessions available to charities, organisations, and businesses (including our existing and potential supply chain partners) across SSEN licence areas. The Climate Academy supports SSEN’s commitment to assisting other organisations on their transition to net zero.
